Mud as guarantee of success
In the near past, this ancient, quiet, rather undistinguishable resort town was familiar to the Russians only because of the Bulgarian toothpaste “Pomorin”. Some of them used to associate the town’s name with one of the most designated trademarks of brandy in the former Soviet Union: the Bulgarian “Pliska” and “Slanchev Briag”. At that time, neither the Russians, nor the Bulgarians, have imagined that, in the beginning of XXI century, Pomorie would turn into a luxurious place for rest, and would be one of the best seaside balneological resorts in Bulgaria. The 100 years old Pomorie comprises two parts – the old part of the town is situated on a peninsula that could be reached by just one narrow road. That distinguishable town with history is densely built-up, with narrow winding streets – expressive, and even eclectic (the native guides usually talk with pride about the several buildings built in style “Modern”). The new town is situated on the continental part, and according to the guides, it is not less attractive than the old town. It has its places of interest, rectangular quarters, with lots of tiny hotels with luxurious rooms, and the new buildings are really impressive with the individuality of their designs.
Pomorie is a balanced and quiet resort. It does not impose its places of interest on its guests, although some interesting architectural monuments could be seen there, such as the active monastery “St. George”, which has been built on the seaside and has preserved its appearance of the year 1856, or the little church “Preobrazhenie Hristovo”, the construction of which dates back to the year 1764; the quite interesting Thracian tomb-mausoleum, situated on several kilometers south of the town, in the location “Kuhata”. When you enter it, you pass a 22 meter-long corridor and reach a room, which has served the Thracians as a tomb, and the Romans – as a mausoleum.
The first contemporary balneological public health station was built here in the year 1902, and nowadays, on the Pomorie lake’s shore, there are a contemporary balneological center with a resort polyclinic, departments for mud-cure, water-cure, physiotherapy and curative gymnastics, a medical boarding-house and a sanatorium.
Tourists do not have to comply with any imposed modes of rest in the town. The guests of Pomorie have the possibility of either choosing the beach, or taking pleasure in a new kind of tourism – the wine one (sometimes, after visiting wine-cellars and testing wines, the excursions end with a lunch or dinner with folklore programme), or take care of their health due to the centuries-old balneological experience of the region.
All that could explain why the population of Pomorie, which numbered to 14 000, is rapidly growing during the recent years. The place is also very attractive to foreigners who buy their second residences in Bulgaria.
Real Estates
The enterprising Irishmen are pioneers of the Pomorie real estates market. The native people have named the first resort complex “The Irish Village” (“Irlandskoto Selo”), because of the great number of Irishmen there.
Sites in Pomorie could be found on the Russian real estates market. For instance, big apartments (an apartment with 5 rooms and area of 240 square meters is offered for the amount of 270 000 Euros); a tiny three-star hotel, with 14 rooms, situated in the old part of the town, on 300 meters’ distance from the beach, could be bought for the amount of 450 000 Euros. Still, most preferred of all are the residences in the vacation complexes that are recently being built, or in the new block of flats. Such a resort estate could be easily rented out. Prices are very rapidly increasing, and one could really earn a lot of money due to the investments made.
One of the most well known complexes in Pomorie is situated on 1,5 kilometers’ distance from the town – Rola Silent Beach Resort. The German company MBN is building 6 luxurious houses and 127 apartments and studios there, on area of 9300 square meters. The infrastructure of the complex comprises a SPA center, a medical-recreation center, an aqua park with water attractions, a private beach, a yachts’ port, two swimming pools, a park for walks, a restaurant, built on the very coast of the sea, and many other attractions. The above-mentioned “Irlandskoto Selo” is situated nearby. The prices are higher that 60 000 Euros.
The future complex for wine tourism is also very attractive. It will be situated on the territory of the main hall for wine tasting in Bulgaria – the Pomorie wine-cellar, and property of one of the biggest producers of wines – “Festa Holding”. “Via Pontica” is being constructed on area of 10 000 square meters, and it will comprise a restaurant, a trade center, a fitness center, and a contemporary SPA center. The apartments are a good investment for people who wish to rent them out. The cheapest ones cost 49 000 Euros.
The wine tourism is not yet quite well known in Russia, but it is very popular abroad and turns out to be one of the most attractive and expensive ways for entertainment.
“Festa Apartments –Pomorie” is the most ambitious and expensive complex. It will comprise 192 apartments with area of 57 to 130 square meters, on the very shore of the sea. Except for the residential part, it will have a bar, a restaurant, commercial outlets, and fitness and SPA center.
Along with the designs “Via Pontica” and “Festa Apartments –Pomorie”, “Festa Holding” are also popular with their project “Festa Panorama Iberostar Hotel – Nesebar”, honoured with first prize for “Building of the year”. So, the quality of this company’s construction could be considered really good (that is what their lowest prices of 75 000 Euros show).
Curative mud
Pamporovo is not only a sea resort. It is a famous balneological center. The town is situated near a very salty lagoon of natural origin – the Pomorie lake, situated in the North part of the peninsula, with length of 3-4 kilometers, parallel to the sea coast. Curative mud is obtained here. This is a unique nature product of organic and inorganic compounds. This mud has deep black colour and smell of hydrogen sulphide, with small structure and good plasticity. The ancient Thracians have called the lake “sacred”, because of the mud’s healing properties. The first contemporary public health station was built here in the year 1902, and nowadays, on the shore of the Pomorie lake, there are a contemporary balneological center with a resort polyclinic, departments for mud-cure, water-cure, physiotherapy and curative gymnastics, a medical boarding-house and a sanatorium. During the whole year, the following diseases are treated here: locomotory system diseases, diseases of the peripheral nervous system, skin and gynecological diseases.
One of the biggest Bulgarian centers for treatment of disabled persons works in Pomorie. The Pomorie curative mud, the very salty lagoon, the favourable sea climate, the sea and the beaches are the basic curative factors. Patent medicines are made of the curative mud. They are in the guise of paste, extracts and electropheresis. The therapeutcal effect of salty water is particular. Salty water contains ions of magnij, bromine, iodine, sulphate ion, and is used as compresses, as well as for electrophoresis.
White wines and brandy are another pride of Pomorie. The renowned wine factory “Black Sea Gold”, with its wine taste hall, is situated in the surroundings of the town. The currents, coming from the Balkan, give quite favourable conditions for growing the unique sort of grapes as the Pomorie sort in the villages of Kamenar and Kableshkovo. That is why, Western and Russian entrepreneurs are purchasing more and more lands and grapes plantations. And, the Pomorie wine cellar is considered to be one of the biggest and most contemporary cellars in Bulgaria.
