Central Balkan National Park Encompasses Nine Wildlife Reserves
The Central Balkan National Park lies in the heart of Bulgaria, nestled in the central and higher parts of the Balkan Mountains Range. It was established in 1991 to conserve the unique natural scenery and heritage of this area and protect the customs and livelihood of the local population.
The Central Balkan National Park contains rare and endangered wildlife species and communities, self-regulating ecosystems of biological diversity.
This treasury of living plants and animals spreads on 716 sqm which is only 0.6% of Bulgaria's territory but it preserves 62% of the mammal species in Bulgaria, 45% of nestling birds, 40% of the reptiles, 50% of the amphibians, 70% of the invertebrates - some of them are endangered species on a global scale.
The Central Balkan Park includes nine nature reserves in the Balkan Mountains - Boatin, Tsarichina, Kozia Stena, Steneto, Severen Djendem, Peeshti Skali, Sokolna, Djendema and Stara Reka. The reserve is situated 820 m above the sea level.
