Pamporovo with state-of-the-art facilities

2008-12-12   |  www.sofiaecho.com, excerpts

With an official ceremony on December 7, the new lift in Pamporovo was inaugurated – the most advanced six-man chair lift in South Eastern Europe and only the second of its kind on the entire continent – the other being in France. The Pomagalski lift will link Pamporovo ski complex and the village with the Stoikite adjacent to the Snejanka summit, in less than eight minutes, traveling at six meters a second.

The investment company Pamporovo AD has said that the facility measures 2992 m and can transport 2400 people per hour. Simultaneously with the new cable gondola, two new pistes with a total length of seven km, connecting Pamporovo with Stoikite, will considerably ease ski traffic.

From a business perspective, this will also prolong the ski season because, for the first time, the mountain’s north slope will be brought into service. At present this is the largest single investment in a ski resort in Bulgaria, according to Dora Yankova, the mayor of Smolyan, as reported by the Pamporovo AD website.

The only other such advanced facility in the entire continent currently operates in the French resort of Les Arcs. The technical parameters, performance and capacity of the facility are truly state-of-the-art, with the bill for the new infrastructure topping 20 million leva. Consequently, with the new lift easing the flow of traffic, ski cards for the new season will be cheaper, although the discount is, as yet, undetermined. Information will be made available after consultations between the three major ski resorts in Bulgaria: Borovets, Bansko and Pamporovo.

Regardless of the outcome of the negotiations, however, business entrepreneurs are confident that this season Pamporovo will be the most competitive winter resort thanks to cheaper prices and increased capacity.
